Violet was in the tub looking at her waterproof book, "Water, water everywhere."
"Can you read it?" she asked.
"Water, water everywhere," I read.
"No," Violet said.
"No? What do you mean? That's what it says."
"Can you read it so it spells 'chocolate?'"
I didn't understand and the she helped me out. "Chocolate, chocolate everywhere," she "read."
I read the whole book making "chocolate" substitutions. Violet was happy.

An Idea for You
We were doing pajamas and combing hair and Violet said, "Do I have an idea for you!"
"An idea, what is it?" I asked.
"It's a comb-brush."
"A comb-brush, what is that?"
Violet smiled and said, "It's a surprise."

Dance!
Like most kids, Violet likes music. Many of her toys have canned songs.
Today she was playing her toy piano, the one which always plays "Pop Goes the Weasel" regardless of which key she presses. She starts playing at an even pace and says "Dance!"
I look at her and say, "I don't want to dance."
She tries again, "Dance!"
I think she gets the hint that I'm not going to dance so she stops the nag. She looks at my face for a long time and says, "You've got gentle eyes."
While that's a super compliment, it's not something I've ever said. Where does she get this stuff?

Bubbles
Violet was watching the "Three Little Pigs" on the computer.
"He's got big teeth," she says of the Big Bad Wolf.
"Yes, he does," I agrees.
"I don't want to blow bubbles with him," she says, probably the worst
insult in her repertoire.
"No?" I ask.
"No," she confirms, "he's too loud."

Weirdo
We were driving in the car, and Violet started making announcements to me. "My pony's singing," she said, referring to her ponytail. A few moments of silence passed and then Violet started laughing. Through a giggle she said, "My pony's a weirdo."
After her giggles subsided, she started "taking pictures" with her toy camera. She took a picture of me driving. She looked down at the camera and said, "That came out good!"

Random
Playing with Crayons I asked Violet, "Can you draw a doggie?"
She drew something that looked like a lime wedge sitting on a lily pad. She said, "That's a doggie nose."
I didn't see it, but I didn't want to disagree.
Then she said "Yeah, he got fur on one side," adding to the lily pad.
"Oh Yeah?" I said.
"Yes, well it's 'cause he's the strawberry meatball."
She added something about a truck with feathers before we ran off to the bath.
So Random.

The Restaurant
We pulled into the parking lot of a restaurant. Violet recognized the
place and said "a restaurant."
I said, "Yes it is a restaurant."
Then Violet asked "Are you going to have some beer?"
I'm generally honest with her so I said, "Yes, I think so."
"Yeah," she said knowingly.

Sounds Good
We were driving and Violet started up with the "I'll huff and I'll
puff. So I finished with "and I'll blow your house down." I did that
a couple times and Violet laughed at me and said, "Sounds good!"

Get Up!
Someone down the street is having some big party. Walking to our car
we overheard their music. Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" was playing
down at the party. Violet caught the "get up, get up, get up" part
and repeated it over and over. I'm glad that was the only lyric that
she grabbed!

Hiking
We took Violet to a state park for a hike today. Once we were in the
woods Violet very loudly said, "Bye, bye car!"
We then got to some stone steps that led to the edge of a lake.
Violet looked at the steps and declared, "I can do the mountain," and
marched up them.
I explained to Violet about the trail we were on and that she needed
to follow it. We pulled off in a nice spot and laid out our blanket
for a picnic snack. Some people passed us by near to, but not exactly
on the trail. Violet didn't like that and yelled to them "Get on the
path!"
We went to the side of a river and looked at a wonderful wide
waterfall. At first she found the roar of the water overpowering, but
once we backed up a few paces to a quieter spot she liked it.
I asked Violet, "Isn't it pretty how the sun bounces off the water?"
Still standing, she folded over, doubled in half and screamed "It's
sooo pretty!" She screamed it over and over. I love her quiet
appreciation of nature.

A Fine Gift!
Violet was busy in the living room playing for a while. She came over
to Mommy and presented this. She said, "Happy Birthday, Momma!"
Such a sweetie sometimes!

Shoopa the Bride
Violet took her yellow blanket and wore the middle of it across her forehead. She had the ends hanging down on either side of her head down to her back. She declared "I'm getting married." Christie looked again and realized that the blanket hanging the way it was did look like a veil.
"You're getting married?" Christie asked?
"Yes. I going to marry Auntie Coles."

Bear Bear and the Moon
Violet has several favorite stuffed animals, and a contender for the most favorite spot is Bear Bear, a grapefruit-sized white teddy bear. Because of her (we recently learned from Violet that Bear Bear is a girl, though when this story took place she was a he) favored status, Violet always looks for her in the crib when it's time to sleep.
For a two plus weeks we couldn't find Bear Bear anywhere. We tore the house apart trying to find him. It's always a bit of a hunt at bedtime to track Bear Bear down, but this day we had no luck. I put her to bed with her other stuffed animals, playing up how soft and cute Monkey Junior was to get her mind off Bear Bear.
After a few more days of trying different clever hiding spots we were starting to give up on finding Bear Bear. But you start to think, where could he go?
The next day we asked Violet about Bear Bear. "Violet do you know where Bear Bear is?"
Violet said, "He's outside. He's watching the moon." We didn't know what to make of it but found it cute she had a story made up. It was still winter when this came up, so Bear Bear hadn't been brought outside to play. I checked the porch and the car, but found nothing.
Violet never freaked out about the missing bear, but she would ask about him. "Where's Bear Bear?" she'd ask.
"I don't know," I'd say. "We haven't found him yet."
"He's watching the moon," Violet said with certainty, making me wonder why she'd asked us if she had an answer already.
After winter broke a bit we did some yard cleanup. Violet was outside with us and suddenly declared, "My bear!" I was stunned when she found the missing Bear Bear outside in the yard, very close to the porch so we couldn't see him from atop it. He was mostly covered by the overhang of the roof, so the rain and snow hadn't gotten to him too badly. After a trip through the washer he was back in action.
We realized that there was one day that because of a bizarre set of unfortunate circumstances involving our dog and a mess he made, we had the window open, even thought it was cold outside. We think that Violet chucked him out the window to explore and she knew the he was there all along but wasn't clear in telling us.
So when Violet says that something is "outside, watching the moon" she might be right.

Big Bad Violet?
We've been watching the old Walt Disney cartoon of the Three Little Pigs. Violet really loves it. Today she was in the tub, playing for a few minutes before we got down to washing. She declared herself to be the Big Bad Wolf. She said, "I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your tubby down!"
Then as sortof an after thought she added, "...And I'll blow your other house down."
