Violet has several favorite stuffed animals, and a contender for the most favorite spot is Bear Bear, a grapefruit-sized white teddy bear. Because of her (we recently learned from Violet that Bear Bear is a girl, though when this story took place she was a he) favored status, Violet always looks for her in the crib when it's time to sleep.
For a two plus weeks we couldn't find Bear Bear anywhere. We tore the house apart trying to find him. It's always a bit of a hunt at bedtime to track Bear Bear down, but this day we had no luck. I put her to bed with her other stuffed animals, playing up how soft and cute Monkey Junior was to get her mind off Bear Bear.
After a few more days of trying different clever hiding spots we were starting to give up on finding Bear Bear. But you start to think, where could he go?
The next day we asked Violet about Bear Bear. "Violet do you know where Bear Bear is?"
Violet said, "He's outside. He's watching the moon." We didn't know what to make of it but found it cute she had a story made up. It was still winter when this came up, so Bear Bear hadn't been brought outside to play. I checked the porch and the car, but found nothing.
Violet never freaked out about the missing bear, but she would ask about him. "Where's Bear Bear?" she'd ask.
"I don't know," I'd say. "We haven't found him yet."
"He's watching the moon," Violet said with certainty, making me wonder why she'd asked us if she had an answer already.
After winter broke a bit we did some yard cleanup. Violet was outside with us and suddenly declared, "My bear!" I was stunned when she found the missing Bear Bear outside in the yard, very close to the porch so we couldn't see him from atop it. He was mostly covered by the overhang of the roof, so the rain and snow hadn't gotten to him too badly. After a trip through the washer he was back in action.
We realized that there was one day that because of a bizarre set of unfortunate circumstances involving our dog and a mess he made, we had the window open, even thought it was cold outside. We think that Violet chucked him out the window to explore and she knew the he was there all along but wasn't clear in telling us.
So when Violet says that something is "outside, watching the moon" she might be right.
